Quality Acoustics in the Styx
The Styx Centre, on Guernsey, is a community hall held in trust by the Western Parishes Youth and Community Centre Trust, a registered charity. The centre itself offers a fantastic resource for the community, accommodating many diverse groups and activities from Scouts and keep fit to Youth Clubs and even a library service. However, it suffered from poor acoustics within its main hall - an issue that is common within many community and village halls.
Styx Centre Manager, Tanya, first contacted SRS in the very early stages of researching possible solutions to the acoustic problems. From the detailed information Tanya supplied, SRS were able to use their acoustic modelling software to create an acoustic representation of the room as it currently stood, and were then able to predict the amount of Sonata acoustic absorbers that would be required to solve the problem. A report, detailing before and after treatment performances, along with quotations for the work, were sent back to Tanya to discuss with the rest of the committee.
After careful consideration of all of the options, if was decided to proceed with the Sonata treatment, and Sound Reduction Systems Director, Alex Docherty, visited site to ensure that all measurements were correct, and to discuss layout and colour options with the committee.
The final treatment to the hall comprised of 80No, 1200x1000x50mm and 16No. 1200x600x50mm, Class A rated Sonata Aurio absorbers. Colours were chosen by the committee, who also had a hand in the design and arrangement of the panels, to ensure the aesthetics of the treatment matched its acoustic performance. The experienced and friendly SRS absorption installation team were despatched to the Island and completed the install over a matter of days.
Following the installation, Styx Centre manager, Tanya, commented:
